History:
Rodney Stiff, the founder of the very successful Jabiru company at Bundaberg in Queensland which produces the Jabiru Aircraft for the world’s recreational aviation market, has a background in mechanical engineering and was involved in the design and construction of equipment for cane harvesting for many years. Early in his career, and prior to setting up Jabiru, he designed and built an all-composite canard wing aircraft and initially attempted to fly it himself. Testing of the aircraft, including early taxiing tests and one flight, were performed from a beach in north Queensland. He was unable to get the machine airborne and one of his daughters did fly the aircraft shortly but it was decided to shelve the design and it was not flown again. The machine was later broken up and disposed of. Mr Stiff and his Company, initially Avtech and later Jabiru, went on to develop and build the Jabiru series of light aircraft.
