History:
Mr G S Richardson in 1900 moved to the town of Penguin in Tasmania and built and operated a small cordial drink facility. He moved on to manufacturing and repairing bicycles, eventually providing servicing to motor-cycles and motor cars. In 1908 he designed and built a man-powered aircraft known as the Albatross which was pedal-powered and, piloted by Dr DeWitt Henry, an attempted flight from a hill to the east of the town was made this was not particularly successful, ending up with a crash on to Watcombe Beach. The pilot suffered some injuries. The pilot sat on a bicycle, this being suspended under the wing by a number of struts. The main struts attached to the leading and trailing edges of the wing. Flying wires were attached to the wing tips. The wingspan was approximately 9.14 m (30 ft).
