History:
Australian philanthropist, Sir Edward Hallstrom, based in Sydney, was well known, amongst other things, for the design, development, production and marketing of the Hallstrom series of refrigerators, which became a by-word for efficiency at the time. He was also known for his work with Sydney’s Taronga Park Zoo, being involved financially and in many other ways with the development of the Zoo and the obtaining and showing to the public many rare animals from around the World.
In his younger years he was interested in aviation, and was involved in the design and construction of an aircraft at Croydon, NSW. It was fitted with a 15-kw (20-hp) engine but was destroyed by high winds in about July 1910 before, as far as is known, any flight testing could be carried out. This was one of a series of aircraft built around that time aimed at being entered in a competition announced by the Australian Defence Department on 11 September 1909 for the best and most suitable aeroplane for military purposes, entrants hoping to obtain a contract to build aeroplanes for the Australian military.
