History:
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat for many years was one of the most potent interceptor / fighters in the armoury of the US Navy and saw combat on a number of occasions operating from aircraft carriers of the US Fleet. Its history has been well documented over the years. A total of 633 examples was built for the US Navy, and a further 71 were delivered to Iran. The type was retired from service in early 2007. In 1991 the US Government presented the RAN Fleet Air Arm Museum at Nowra with a F-14A and arrangements were made for it to be conveyed to docks in the United States to be conveyed to Australia, with other aircraft for the RAAF, on board HMAS Kanimbla on its delivery voyage. However, the aircraft did not reach the docks in time before the ship sailed and since then the Museum has been awaiting delivery by other means.
