History:
These were single-seat, full scale replicas of a Supermarine Spitfire, one being built by Mr Gerald Finch at Mareeba in Queensland. Of all metal construction, it was painted in a camouflage colour scheme and registered VH-NEY2 (c/n 0010708). When initially designed it was to be fitted with a Ranger engine but was later fitted with a Continental IO-470-S engine driving a D3A34C404 propeller. Plans were to replace this unit with an IO-550 unit. It was eventually flown to Willowvale near Warwick, QLD and was based there. At one stage it is believed plans were to be made available for amateur construction. Loaded weight 1,650 kg (3,638 lb).
In 2016 the Spitfire replica was noted for sale. In 2020 it was owned and operated by Mark McDonald of Koonawarra, VIC and is fitted with a Lycoming IGSO-540-A1A engine.
A further example of a Spitfire Mk V to full scale was built in Queensland. Little is known about it but it was noted attending an aviation event at Mareeba, QLD in 2013. It was registered VH-KPW3 (c/n 2/2008) on 16 July 2008. It is registered to Patrick Albert as Trustee for the EnglishWarbirds Trust of Cairns, QLD and has been operated by Autopilot Cairns Pty Ltd. It is powered by a Lycoming TIO-540-AE2A engine. Some six years were spent in building the aircraft at Mareeba, QLD
It is of all-metal construction with a hydraulically operated undercarriage with an emergency pump for operation in an emergency. The cruising speed has been estimated at between 333 – 370 km/h (207 to 230 mph) and it has an endurance of five hours. Oxygen is fitted for altitude work and to operate the mock machine guns in combination with LPG, the cyclic rate of firing being ten times a second.
