History:
On 21 May 1914 Mr J E Bailey flew an aircraft of his own design and construction at Bacchus Marsh, VIC for the first time. However, at 914 m (3,000 ft) during test flying the engine failed. Accounts indicate he “tried to volplane but failed to control the machine properly. He managed, however, by use of a patent device of his own, to check the great downward rush.” However, the speed was too great and the aircraft crashed and was wrecked, the pilot being knocked unconscious.
