History:
The ASSO Champion V was one of a series of light aircraft designed in Italy by Guiseppe Vidor, the first of this model making its first flight in 1995. It was designed to meet the Italian CAA regulations under Chapter 223 and later in 2001 it was re-calculated in Germany to meet new requirements. Type certification in Germany was granted on 30 August 2004 .
The aircraft was constructed of spruce, fir, pine or hemlock, the outer skin being completed with birch plywood, okoume or poplar. Construction was classic wood with connecting parts of steel or aluminium and the wings were covered in Dacron. It had wide ailerons and landing flaps.
Engines such as the Jabiru 2200 and Rotax 912 have been fitted and it could be fitted with a fixed or retractable tricycle undercarriage.
Plans were made available from Quebec in Canada.
First example completed in this region became ZK-OSC (c/n 286) operated by Mr G Fletcher of Blenheim, NZ, being powered by a Hirth engine. Another example is understood to be under construction in New Zealand.
