History:
The MCR-4 series was designed and is marketed in France by Societe Dyn’Aero of Darois. It was initially produced in two variants, the MCR-01 ULC, being an ultralight with a max all-up weight of 450 kg (992 lb) so was able to be registered under ultralight regulations; and the MCR-4 series, which had a max all-up weight of 750 kg (1,653 lb) and so could be registered as a light aircraft on the general aircraft Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) register. In the MCR-4 model, with an empty weight of 325 kg (716 lb), it could lift four adults from a 700 m (2,300 ft) strip, climb at 152 m/min (500 ft/min) and cover 1,482 km (920 miles) at 120 knots (138 mph / 222 km/h).
The wing was quite small and had low drag at cruise, having retractable high-lift devices for take-off and landing. The undercarriage was fixed. The aircraft was available in kit form from the manufacturers. In later times the Company kept the design work in France and opened a plant in Portugal to manufacture and distribute the aircraft.
This series was developed from the MC-100, an all-aluminium design by Michel Colomban fitted with a 60 kw (80 hp) engine. In the MCR the aircraft was re-designed, using the same aerodynamics. The spar was wood and carbon fibre, the wing ribs were foam, and the wing was skinned either in aluminium or composite. The fuselage was largely monocoque structure.
More than 200 kits have been sold with a number delivered around the world.
Two MCR-4s have been built in New Zealand, the first example being ZK-PSA (c/n 104) registered to Pestar Holdings Ltd of Manukau.
