History:
The Pelican series of light aircraft was marketed by Ultravia Aero Inc at Mascouche, Quebec, Canada, as a homebuilt two-seat touring aircraft supplied in kit form for the amateur builder. The initial series was known as the Super Pelican and was produced in the 1980s. It was powered by a 26 kw (35 hp) Global [1,039 cc] two-cylinder horizontally-opposed four-stroke engine. It was developed and later produced in two basic variants, the Pelican and Pelican Club, the PL-912 with a 60 kw (80 hp) Rotax 912 engine, and the PL-914 with the 86 kw (115 hp) Rotax 914. The turbocharged variant of the latter could also be installed. Engines ranging from 60 kw (80 hp) to 112 kw (150 hp) could be installed.
The Pelican had a composite fuselage, and single-strut all-metal wings. It could be fitted with a tricycle or tailwheel undercarriage, skis, floats or amphibious floats. A number have been imported to this region, the first imported being fitted with a derivative of a Volkswagen engine. One of the first was Pelican Club GS ZK-OOO (c/n 522) fitted with a Rotax 912 engine driving a three-blade Airmaster variable-pitch propeller and fitted with a tricycle undercarriage.
Other New Zealand Pelicans include ZK-FTE (c/n AACA/1071), ZK-JGY (c/n 523) registered on 28 September 2012 which later became ZK-CMA, ZK-MAL (c/n 524), ZK-PPL (c/n 582), ZK-JHP (c/n 529) with a tricycle undercarriage, ZK-PLP (c/n 663) registered on 30 November 1999 and fitted wtih a Rotax 914 engine. The registration of this latter aircraft was changed to ZK-PTP on 14 June 2004 but it was changed back to ZK-PLP on 28 July 2005.
Aircraft in Australia registered under RAA regulations include 19-3337 (c/n 706) and 19-3365 (c/n 646). Others have been registered under Australian AUF / RAA regulations, which only permit a maximum all-up-weight of 480 kg (1,058 lb), options such as leather seats, cabin heating exchanger, comprehensive instrumentation etc not being available.
