History:
The Magnum was one of a series of light kit-built aircraft produced by Avid Aircraft Inc of Idaho, USA and was one of the larger aircraft produced in the range by the ompany. Engines in the 90 kw (120 hp) to 134 kw (180 hp) range could be installed but most popular was the Lycoming O-320 unit. Options included an extra fuel tank containing 39 litres (8.3 Imp gals), a jump seat, and a side baggage door.
The Magnum was available in kit form and could be built with a tricycle or tailwheel undercarriage. The wings could be folded for storage. Construction of the fuselage was of tubular steel with ceconite covering. The wings had aluminium spars and wooden ribs covered with ceconite. Seating was for two side-by-side with an option to have an additional seat in the baggage area for two children or one small adult.
The first example of the type registered in this region became ZK-CLC (c/n 83M – ex N180UL) to its owner at Collingwood, NZ on 2 October 2007 fitted with a Lycoming O-360 engine.
