History:
The Colby was a single-seat ultralight aircraft built by Mr Colin Thorpe and was basically a Flightstar modified by the builders to meet their needs. A small number were built to these specifications in Australia and known examples include one with a Rotax 377 engine in Melbourne and another (10-1918) in Queensland initially built with a Rotax 447 engine but this was later changed to a Rotax 503 to provide more power. The aircraft followed basic ultra-light design with metal construction covered with fabric and an engine fitted forward of the fuselage and above the cockpit.
Empty weight 146 kg (322 lb); loaded 300 kg (661 lb); wing loading 22.4 kg/m²; cruising speed 102 km/h (63 mph); rate of climb 378 m/min (1,240 ft/min); fuel capacity 40 litres (8.8 Imp gals); glide ratio 7:1. Photo: 10-1918 fitted with a Rotax 503 engine.
