The Roodt Sunbird 19-7475 (c/n 1) at Tumut, NSW (Mike Roodt)
History:
The Sunbird was designed and built by Michael Roodt, one of a number of self designed and built light aircraft. Mr Roodt is a retired Boeing 747 Flight Engineer whose hobby has been designing and constructing aircraft in the Tumut, NSW area. It is a two-seats in tandem light parasol-wing aircraft with an open cockpit. Powered by a 68-kw (95-hp) BMW K-100 four-cylinder fuel injected engine converted motor cycle engine, the propeller was driven with a belt reduction drive. Registered 19-7475 (c/n 1) with Recreation Aviation Australia (RAA) in June 2010, it has full length ailerons and tail surfaces. It was initially based at Tumut NSW.
Other aircraft designed and built by Mr Roodt include:
- Roodt Barnstormer, a two-seat scale Boeing Stearman fitted with a Rotec R-2800 radial engine providing 83 kw (110 hp) with a cruising speed of 121 km/h (75 mph) and a stalling speed of 68 km/h (42 mph).
- Roodt Bumblebee, a biplane initially fitted with a 39 kw (52 hp) Rotax 503 engine but the engine was replaced in 2021 with a 60 kw (80 hp) Jabiru 2200 four-cylinder engine.
- Roodt Spurwing, a two-seat in tandem aircraft fitted with a Rotax 618 LC engine providing (75 hp). This aircraft was initially designed and built in South Africa where the first aircraft was used for border patrol. The engine is in the pusher configuration and it was popular due to its STOL performance and good visibility. At least two were built in South Africa and another one is being built in Australia at Tumut, NSW.
- Roodt Tempest. This is a two-seat design for touring by the designer and builder with seats side-by-side and is fitted with a (108 hp) Lycoming four-cylinder engine
