The Yak-7 was designed by Alexander S Yakovlev and was a development of the Yak-1, initially known as the I-26, which was first flown in 1940.

In 1947 Westland Aircraft Co obtained a licence to build the Sikorsky S-51 in the United Kingdom for the British military services, this being a four-seat general purpose helicopter in service with the USAAF.

The Grumman G21 series of twin engine amphibians was introduced in 1937.
