Known initially as the Fairey Type Q, the prototype of the Fairey Gannet (VR546) flew for the first time on 19 September 1949, the second prototype (VR557) flying on 6 July 1950.
With a flight crew of two on a separate flight deck, and normal accommodation for six to nine persons in the cabin, the Piper Model PA-42 Cheyenne III, introduced in 1979, became the largest aircraft of the Piper range.
Over the years a number of conversions have been made to the Douglas DC-3 / C-47 series to increase performance and this has usually involved the installation of turboprop power plants.
