History:
The Cessna Model 205 was introduced into the Cessna range in August 1962 as a utility transport to suit operators which required a larger aircraft than the Model 185 Skywagon. Following the general formula of previous Cessnas, and featuring the swept vertical tail surfaces first introduced on the Model 210, the Cessna 205 (officially known as the Model 210-5) was basically a Model 210 with a fixed undercarriage. The designers placed prominence on ease of maintenance and service accessibility. This model also provided double doors in the fuselage for access to the rear seats, or for cargo placement.
Certification of the Model 205 was received on 14 June 1962 and the type was complementary to the Model 185, having a similar performance but better carrying capacity. Deliveries began in August 1962. The Model 205A was introduced to the market in December 1963.
The Model 205 was only in production for a short period, being produced in 205 and 205A models. Some 577 examples were completed. Following further development, it was replaced on the production line by the Model 206, of similar configuration but featuring a number of improvements.
When it first appeared on the Australian register the Model 205 was known as the Model 210/5. Most examples imported to this region were used in the charter and light freight role. A small number of the examples imported to this region have survived.
